Tovino Thomas’s Kaala has released on March 25th this year. Its run has been cut short by the COVID second wave. The Malayalam version of the film released recently on Amazon Prime Video along with the Tamil dubbed version. The Telugu dubbing version has landed on Aha Video and will be premiered on June 4th.
Until now, for films made in Malayalam, the dubbing versions of Telugu and Tamil used to be addons. They barely got any additional revenue for the makers. “We used to think they will a bit of value to the Original deal. At times, we would not even the costs of dubbing for such versions. The pandemic created a market for such films. Adding more value, Aha Video is aggressively bidding for the Telugu version of such films bringing additional revenues,” says Malayalam filmmakers.
“We need one Aha Video for every regional film industry like Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, etc which will add more value to the OTT rights of the dubbing versions. The best example is how Kaala Telugu rights which normally go to Amazon got a better price and landed on Aha Video,” they say. This extra revenue will help increase the film budgets and will also increase the markets.
Usually, TV channels and OTT players push the dubbing to the filmmakers which results in a shoddy quality sometimes (due to the lack of proper revenues). But then, Aha Video takes that for itself which is also resulting in a quality product for the Telugu audience.
