Netflix Acquires Potential Oscar 2024 Nominee ‘American Symphony’

‘Navalny’, a political documentary which focused on Russian leader Alexei Navalny and his poisoning, had won the ‘Best Documentary Feature’ prize at the 2023 edition of the prestigious Oscar Awards. And now, all eyes will now be on the documentary films vying for the competitive Oscar 2024 race.

And one of the top contenders this year for the ‘Best Documentary Feature’ award is a documentary film called ‘American Symphony’. After a recent bidding war, streaming giant Netflix has reportedly (via THR) acquired the potential Oscar 2024 nominee documentary film. ‘American Symphony’ is being listed among the top contenders by some reputed entertainment portals as far as the predictions for the 96th Oscars for the category are concerned.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Matthew Heineman, the documentary film ‘American Symphony’ focuses on the journey during a period of one year (2022 to be specific) in the life of musician Jon Batiste. Just as the gifted musician is gearing up for his most ambitious work, which is slated to premiere at Carnegie Hall, he suffers from a devastating personal setback pertaining to his wife Suleika Jaouad’s recurrence of Leukaemia after a remission period of around ten years. It was the same year in which Jon Batiste had won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year for ‘We Are’.

‘American Symphony’ helmer Matthew Heineman is a well-known name across the globe as one of the most talented documentary filmmakers around. He received an Oscar nomination in 2016 for his documentary film ‘Cartel Land’, which was about the drug menace on the US-Mexico border for which he had also won a Primetime Emmy award. Now, with ‘American Symphony’ as among the top contenders for the Oscar 2024 race, it looks like Matthew Heineman is nicely set for his first Academy Award and the film is a great catch by Netflix.
