Netflix has confirmed the production of a brand new Korean sci-if film ‘Jung-E’ (working title) from the ‘Train to Busan’ director Yeon Sang-ho. The film will star Kang Soo-youn, Kim Hyun-joo and Ryu Kyung-soo in the lead.
As per Netflix, the setting of ‘Jung-E’ (WT) is in the 22nd century where climate changes have made Earth inhabitable, and humans are living in a man-made shelter. An internal war breaks out, and its outcome hinges on the success of brain cloning technology of the legendary robot mercenary Jung-E.
Kang Soo-youn, who is returning to screen after 8 years, will play the role of Seo-hyeon who is the team leader of a lab for brain cloning and AI technology. She is responsible for testing the cloning of Jung-E’s brain and combat capabilities. Kang is the first Korean actor to receive the Best Actress award at The Venice Film Festival, for her role in the 1986 film ‘The Surrogate Womb’. Other credits to her name include ‘Blue In You’, ‘Ladies of the Palace’ and many more.
Kim Hyun-joo plays the titular role of Jung-E, the most elite soldier of the allied forces fighting the shelter troops and a subject of brain-clone testing. Kim will elicit complex emotions through her portrayal of the “legendary mercenary” fighting in dynamic combat scenes and suffering through repeated brain cloning testing. She is known for her roles in dramas like ‘Watcher’, ‘Undercover’ and more.
Ryu Kyung-soo will be seen the tile of Sang-hun, the research center director who is determined to succeed in cloning Jung-E’s brain in order to bring the allied forces to victory. Ryu who has acted in the film ‘A Resistance’ and in the dramas like ‘Itaewon Class’ and ‘Lovestruck in the City’, will be seen in completely different role in ‘Jung-E’.
Kim Hyun-joo and Ryu Kyung-soo will also be seen working with director Yeon Sang-ho in his upcoming Netflix series ‘Hellbound’.
Yeon Sang-ho (‘Peninsula’) will direct the movie based on the story he wrote that focuses on the central themes of brain cloning and human-like mercenary robots. Climax Studio will produce ‘Jung-E’ (WT) which will premiere only on Netflix.
