Are you ready to play the deadly games one last time? Netflix has officially announced the release date for Season 3 of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s record-breaking South Korean series, Squid Game.
According to Netflix’s recent announcement, the final season of Squid Game will premiere on June 27. Here’s the official tweet!
Season 1 premiered on September 17, 2021, and became an overnight sensation worldwide. It reached number one in over 90 countries within the first two weeks. After 28 days, it had amassed viewership from over 142 million member households. Soon, it became Netflix’s most-watched show, racking up over 1.65 billion hours of views within its first 28 days.
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Season 2 also proved to be a massive success, ranking number one in 92 countries and topping Netflix’s non-English TV list with a record-breaking 68 million views in its premiere week. It garnered over 126 million views within the first 11 days of its release.
With such a track record, nothing is stopping Squid Game Season 3 from becoming another major streaming success. The only question is: how good will it be?
Squid Game Season 2 didn’t achieve the same level of universal acclaim as its predecessor, as reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes scores—82% from critics and 63% from audiences.
The second season followed Gi-hun’s attempt to dismantle the games after his narrow escape in Season 1. Despite re-entering the competition, he failed to stop them, as the Front Man consistently outmaneuvered him. The added trauma of witnessing his best friend’s death in the Season 2 finale will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Gi-hun as the series concludes.
Another interesting aspect is the significantly shorter gap between the releases of Seasons 2 and 3, compared to the wait between the first two seasons.
