Netflix, like most US platforms, wore the apron of wokeness, but that might be biting back as their recent series is gaining some global traction, and that too not in a positive light. “Alexander: The Making of a God” is becoming the center of attention for Netflix, and that too in terms of sexuality.
What’s the deal about Alexander now?
Now, if you think that’s an old problem, you would be really wrong. From history to documentaries, there has been a big question mark regarding his sexuality. And it’s not just him, but most Spartans and ancient Greek people, call them weird or progressive; their sexuality is definitely an interesting topic.
Willingly or unwillingly, Netflix twigged the controversy again surrounding Alexander and his love life. That itself is controversial, and mixed with a global OTT series, you’ve got a recipe for online warfare.
As the facts state, ancient Greeks didn’t concern themselves with distinguishing between homosexuality and heterosexuality, creating a context beyond the comprehension of modern and ‘woke’ individuals.
To be very honest, Netflix doesn’t claim it to be an accurate historical documentary but a light educational entertainment, so… thinking of it as facts written in stone is nothing but the humor of a scholar.
Justifying their actions, Netflix made a couple of tweets such as, “The Greeks did not have a word for homosexuality or to be gay. It just wasn’t in their vocabulary whatsoever. There was just being sexual.”
Followed by statements such as, “Still, Alexander the Great’s sexuality can’t totally be defined in modern terms.”
Talking about people’s opinions, most of them are calling it woke propaganda, and some are claiming that Netflix shouldn’t tamper with historical figures.
Now, talking about people’s points of view, they are upset that Netflix portrayed Alexander as gay, which might be a wrong fact. Still, it doesn’t justify the fact that Netflix isn’t claiming to be accurate in this case.
Similar types of accusations came when they were streaming the Cleopatra series.
