There have been several and severe allegations against Netflix India for their inability to understand regional values. Recently, Rana Naidu was thrashed because Netflix failed to convey the boundaries one should maintain while watching the show.
Telugu filmmaker Harish Shankar openly pointed it out in January but there is a new observation. Interestingly, this problem is not only observed in India but also in some international markets. The latest to suffer from this is the Mexican market.
You may be aware that they are coming up with a film set in Puerto Rico, Mexico. Just like there are mythical animals like a Unicorn, the unseen but legendary animal of that region is a Chupacabra. Thus, the film is named Chupa.
The animal is infamous for sucking the blood out of livestock such as a goat. Also, the target audience of the film is children.
But just like so many things that found a different meaning after the age of the internet, the Spanish word Chupa is no exception to that. It actually means to suck. Unfortunately, this word has evolved into something highly sexual. In English, you may think of words like “Daddy” whose meaning among youngsters is now completely changed due to pornographic slang.
It is very clear that not only in India, but the limitations of understanding regional sentiments are not only in India but Mexico too. Needless to say, they must have consulted someone who understands the pulse of the region but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
It immediately attracted trolls and now Chupa is less about film and more about embarrassment for Netflix.
