Netflix Goes All Out, Buys Rights For Daniel Craig’s “Knives Out” Sequels

Netflix is going all out, and this time it’s for a Daniel Craig movie franchise. Well, if you are thinking James Bond, you are wrong because this time it is for the sequels of Knives Out. Netflix has went on to spend a whopping amount of $450 million for the rights of the Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3, the follow-ups for the 2019 hit murder mystery Knives Out. With an amount like this, it makes history as the biggest streamer deals ever made

The sequels will bring back the loved pair of director Rian Johnson and superstar Daniel Craig back again. The earlier worked together for the 1st instalment. Johnson has also written the sequels for the movie like the original and is partnering with producer Ram Bergman for the same. The first film “Knives Out” was produced by Media Rights Capital and was distributed by Lionsgate. MRC had a single picture deal with Knives Out and it seems to have ended with the first movie itself.

The competition was tight, as Netflix, Apple and Amazon along with others battled it out for the deals of the movie. The sequels were definitely in mind, but it comes as a surprise to many that the makers went for streaming services, when it was a single picture deal with the earlier production company.

The movie went on to earn a massive $311.4 million on a $40 budget, making this a hit. As Netflix gets the rights for the movie, the streaming service will have a brand new franchise to work with. Daniel Craig will reprise the role of detective Benoit Blanc. The first movie saw some huge stars like Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collete and Michael Shannon. While their story ended with the first movie itself, it looks like the second and third movies will have different stories with Daniel Craig leading them as the detective.

The shoot for the second movie will eventually begin in the summer and the locations decided for it is the beautiful Greece. There has been no confirmation as to who will star in the movie besides Craig and it will definitely be hard to beat the first since it had such a starry ensemble cast.

The plan of the makers is to make this movie into a successful mystery franchise and with Netflix buying the rights for the franchise, it seems like it’s on the right path to make that happen. As of now, there has been no detail on if the movie will see a theatrical release or will it be exclusively released on Netflix.
