Netflix has reportedly picked up Christian Bale horror-thriller ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ at Berlin’s virtual 2021 European Film Market (EFM), paying a hefty $55 million for the worldwide rights of the film.
As per Deadline, the $55 million Netflix paid for the worldwide deal is a new record at the European Film Market. It also set a new record earlier this week, when it picked up two other films at the Berlin EFM, paying huge sums for both.
Netflix earlier picked up the Liam Neeson action thriller “The Ice Road”, paying $18 million for a US deal. Netflix also bought Colin Firth’s “Operation Mincemeat” for a cool $15 million for North and Latin America. $18 million is also a new record at the EFM for a US only deal for a film.
With its latest acquisition of “The Pale Blue Eye”, Netflix has bought three buzzy films at this year’s Berlin European Film Market. Interestingly, Netflix is the only known buyer to have spent upwards of $10 million to buy a film at the EFM. In fact, Netflix has bought all three of its acquisitions at rates way more than $10 million.
Pale Blue Eye has been written by Scott Cooper, who’s set to direct the film too. It is an adaptation of the Louis Bayard novel of the same name. The film will be bankrolled by Cross Creek Pictures, who’ve earlier produced/financed movies such as The Tax Collector, The Trial Of The Chicago 7, Black Swan, among others.
The Pale Blue Eye is set in the backdrop of 1830s America. It centers on the endeavours of a veteran detective, played by Christian Bale, who investigates multiple murders that occurred at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1830. The older experienced detective is assisted by a young, eagle-eyed cadet, who goes on to become the world famous author, Edgar Allan Poe.
