It’s been just a few days since Sujoy Ghosh’s mystery thriller movie ‘Jaane Jaan’ started streaming on the Netflix OTT platform, and the film has already got a big thumbs-up from OTT audiences not only in India but it’s also trending big time globally on Netflix. As you all know, the film is an on-screen Indian adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s cult 2005 Japanese crime mystery novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’.
Now that ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’ adaptation by Netflix has turned out to be a hit for the streaming platform, Netflix should seriously begin to brainstorm about the idea of making a sequel. And not just for the heck of it. but because a riveting source material for the potential ‘Jaane Jaan’ sequel is already available.
Diehard fans of the globally acclaimed Japanese author Keigo Higashino may already be aware that, besides ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’, the mystery genre maestro has also written another book based on the Detective Galileo series, which ‘The Devotion of Suspect’ belongs to. And the novel’s name is ‘Salvation of a Saint’, which is an equally gripping, entertaining page turner, and the perfect recipe for a ‘Jaane Jaan’ sequel for Netflix.
The underlying plot of the book ‘Salvation of a Saint’ starts off with a mysterious murder of a super-rich man and the needle of suspicion points towards his beautiful and doting wife. But the problem is: the wife was hundreds of miles away when the murder was committed, and her alibi is flawless. So, the police detective (played by Vijay Varma’s character in ‘Jaane Jaan’) must find a way to prove that the wife is guilty of the complex and painstakingly planned and executed crime, despite developing a soft corner for the suspect during the investigation.
So, as you can see from the story of ‘Salvation of a Saint’, the book has some serious potential for being adapted into another film by Netflix – ‘Jaane Jaan 2’, perhaps. Vijay Varma’s character will be there in the potential sequel but there won’t be Jaideep Ahlawat and Kareena Kapoor’s characters. Instead, a new female lead will have to be cast in the sequel. So, Netflix, the ball is in your court now. Please make ‘Jaane Jaan 2’ happen soon!
