Manikarnika, Kangana Ranaut’s film production house, is on course to face a court battle in regards to their film Emergency. Coomi Kapoor has flagged Emergency, Ranaut’s directed and co-produced semi-biographical tale of Indira Gandhi.
This film, inspired by Kapoor’s The Emergency: A Personal History and Priyadarshini: The Daughter of India, has, according to Kapoor, not followed the guidelines of their agreement. Kapoor has decided to send a legal notice to defame Manikarnika and Netflix for ruining her reputation.
The movie starring Kangana as Indira Gandhi has apparently failed to follow two clauses in its contract. Aksht Ranaut’s buyout of the book in 2021 included two clauses. One, the film had to follow complete historical accuracy as accorded by Kapoor’s book. The other was that the disclaimer stated how the movie was ‘inspired’ and ‘based on’ Kapoor’s book.
Specifically stated in the clause was that it was not allowed to use the name of the book or the author without Kapoor’s prior approval. Kapoor rightfully saw this as an attack on her journalistic integrity.
A legal notice sent on April 3rd was not met with a satisfactory response, according to Kapoor. She proclaims inaccuracies as pointed out by her friends and bashes Manikarnika for not having received the script before the release of the film. Kapoor is seemingly all set on conducting a legal battle against Manikarnika for the damage they caused. But the sad news is for Netflix. They practically had nothing to do with this contract, but still suffered the case. Let’s see how it goes.
