The Malayalam movie Thallumala which released last month, was a huge success in the theatre. Directed by Khalid Rahman, this Tovino Thomas film was received by the audience with great response. Reports are that around 70 crores have been collected worldwide. The film was released on the OTT platform through Netflix this past day.
Now the makers of the film have come forward with an allegation against Netflix. They claim that the subtitles of Thallumaala were edited very poorly by Netflix. The crew noted that the subtitles they gave to Netflix were cut and destroyed by adding meaningless words and they are very sad about it. The crew added that the spirit of the dialogues had been lost by editing the subtitles without permission.
“Every line of the English subtitles we did for Thallumala for Netflix was checked by the film’s creative director and one of the writers, Muhsin Parari. But it is with great sadness that we inform you that the subtitles you see now have been edited, toned down, and cut down. A lot of the subtleties it had were lost. Especially when it comes to songs”.
“Making changes without the permission of the subtitle author is totally inappropriate and unethical. We urge Netflix and other streaming platforms not to engage in such activity,” said a statement by ‘Fill in the Blanks’, who are the subtitle creators. Similar accusations have been raised against Netflix before. There were similar controversies when Martin Prakkat’s Naayat was released last year.
Thallumala is available on Netflix now.
