Netflix’s Minnal Murali Deals With Human Emotion: Basil Joseph

The first-ever Malayalam superhero film, ‘Minnal Murali’ is making its way to Netflix for a Christmas Eve premiere. While many of us knew about this already, Netflix India gave us a sneak-peek, behind-the-scenes teaser regarding the aforementioned superhero movie to get us excited about the movie during its “TUDUM” event. The teaser didn’t quench our thirst for a real trailer, however, it did give us an insight into the film’s origins. Basil Joseph, the film’s director, explained that while the film has a superhero element in almost every scene, the movie at its core deals with human emotions – Superheroism is just an X-factor added to the story. To check out the teaser, look for it at the end of this article.

The teaser mainly features Tovino Thomas, the film lead and Basil Joseph, the film director. In the 2-minute clip, they tell us that their comic book story ended up being a huge script worthy plot. The concept of Minnal Murali came about back in September 2018, but it had its challenges. A Malayalam film, with superhero elements, which needs to be realistic and not become a highly stylized action flick from the 2000s, is not an easy film to bring to fruition. It requires careful planning and even better execution.

So, the filmmakers decided to focus on the human elements of the film rather than the film genre. The film will be about a tailor from a small village who acquires superhero powers due to an accident – but the film will primarily focus on the characters and the story. The superhero element will only be a part of the film and it will not be the film’s primary selling point. According to Tovino, this film is an original Malayalam superhero script, which makes the whole concept even more interesting.

Minnal Murali is expected to premiere on Netflix on December 24th 2021.
