Though TikTok is not a platform providing movies, shows or documentaries yet it still is a major threat to Netflix in the sense that people are spending a whole lot of their limited time on it, leaving little or no time for them to spend binge-watching on the platform.
Netflix’s idea of competition has never been restricted to just other OTT platforms. In the past, it has included YouTube, Facebook and even video games in its list of competitors. But this time it’s strikingly different because other than YouTube never before has Netflix considered any social media a threat enough to specifically mention it.
What concerns the OTT platform is the wide ranging popularity of the app which might gain newer heights with the recent appointment of Disney’s head of streaming, Kevin Mayer, as its new CEO. Also, the app has caused major changes in the way people consume entertainment.
Amidst all this, the ban of the app in a major market like India might come as a breather for Netflix. Even US is mulling over the idea of blacklisting TikTok of Chinese origin siting security concerns. Moreover, Netflix has established itself as the market leader gaining record breaking worldwide subscribers recently cited in the company’s official records.
