Netflix recently unveiled the first look of ‘Paranormal’, its first Arabic Original from Egypt. The much awaited show is based on the eponymous best selling thriller novel series by late Ahmed Khaled Tawfik. The series was completed recently after hitting a little snag a due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With this latest Arabic original, Netflix will strengthen its Arabic language library which until now include limited shows like Jinn (Jordan), Al Hayba (Lebanon), Justice: Qalb Al Adala (UAE), Dollar (Lebanon). ‘Paranormal’ marks the first ever Arabic original from Egypt by Netflix and reflects Netflix’s commitment to creating authentic Egyptian content for global audiences to enjoy.
The way Netflix is globalising is astounding, with content from over 20 languages on the platform. In its quest to bring the best and unique content for its subscribers, it has expanded into earlier underexplored regions and languages. This expansion not only helps the streaming service to diversify its content catalogue but also provides a global reach to the otherwise regional content. This step by Netflix helps the content in different languages from different regions around the world gain the recognition and appreciation they deserve.
‘Paranormal’ is a series about “Dr. Refaat Ismail (Ahmed Amin), a cynical Hematologist with a dark sense of humor, who goes through a “journey of doubt” as his world is turned upside down after his lifelong scientific convictions are questioned. The plot commences in 1969, as Dr. Refaat enters his 40s, and begins to experience a series of paranormal activities. Throughout the season, Refaat is accompanied by his university colleague, Maggie Mckillop (Razane Jammal), a Scottish scientist, as they enter the paranormal world and try to save their loved ones from the immense danger that surrounds them”.
Filmed in Egypt, Paranormal is scheduled to come to Netflix in the Fall of 2020. No exact dates have yet been provided by the platform though.
