Winners of the 2023 edition of the Golden Globes Awards are out now. And amongst the winning titles is Guillermo del Toro’s widely acclaimed animated feature film ‘Pinocchio’, which has bagged the ‘Best Picture – Animated’ award at the 80th Golden Globes awards ceremony.
And in doing that, OTT platform Netflix has achieved the distinction of becoming the first streaming service ever to win a Golden Globe award for the best animated feature film category.
Other animated films which were competing with Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ in the same category were ‘Turning Red’, ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’, ‘Inu-Oh’. But they have all been outdone by ‘Pinocchio’ at this year’s Golden Globes.
‘Pinocchio’ is Guillermo del Toro’s second Golden Globes win as he had bagged the ‘Best Director’ award for the 2017 film ‘The Shape of Water’. The Mexican director has been a fierce advocate of animation in cinema. This became even more evident from the fact that while accepting the Golden Globe trophy, he stated that “Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre for kids, it’s a medium.”
After the Golden Globe win for Netflix and Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’, it would now be interesting to see whether the animated film will also be able to win the Oscar Award. That verdict will be out on 12th March when the winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced. Considering the Golden Globes – Oscar win ratio for animated films, Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ holds a good chance at the Oscars as well.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, ‘Pinicchio’ revolves around the titular character, a wooden puppet (voiced by Gregory Mann), who yearns to be a real boy in 1930 Italy. The film also features Ewan McGregor, Christopher Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and Cate Blanchette in various voice acting roles. In case you still haven’t watched it, you can stream the film on the Netflix OTT platform.
