Large corporate houses, often defined by their cold, single-minded pursuit of money and power, do have a heart. And a large one at that. If there’s one silver lining to the tough times of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is proof of the large-heartedness and altruistic nature of corporate entities. One such giant, the colossus of the entertainment world, Netflix of course, has proved that it is larger hearted than most.
The streaming mogul Netflix has generously opened its purse strings to establish a fund of 100 million dollars to provide financial aid and relief to thousands of cine workers around the world who, with the temporary closure of TV, film and digital productions, have lost their only source of income for the time being.
Much of the fund money will go towards providing monetary relief to Netflix’s own army of workers who were engaged on its various productions all around the world, and which have been shutdown in the wake of the rampaging Coronavirus.
The financial aid will be given as top-up help in addition to the two weeks of pay the company already agreed to pay the cast and crew on suspended productions.
The fund will not only be used to provide relief to creative workers, but also to non-creative crew members such as drivers, carpenters, electricians, painters and the like.
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, wrote in his blog post about the fund, “The COVID-19 crisis is devastating for many industries, including the creative community. Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally — leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs.”
“This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide.”
Netflix will also support third party organisations with financial aid, in addition to contributing funds to industry organisations engaged in providing relief and financial aid to workers and crew members.
