Ricky Gervais‘ ‘After Life’, Andy Samberg’s ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘, Jason Sudeikis’ ‘Ted Lasso’, Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Seinfeld’, Larry David’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ are good examples of brilliant comedy series starring and written by brilliant male comedians/ stand up comedians. Of course, over the years, women stand up comedians such as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have created their own brilliant shows and paved the path for many a woman to chase their dreams in this male-dominated business. Netflix continues to promote this equality in the Hollywood sector by releasing the trailers for two shows featuring two women stand up comedians – Iliza Shlesinger and Mae Martin.
Netflix has been doing this (promotion for equality) for some time now. With shows such as ‘Duchess’ created by stand up comedian Kathrine Ryan, ‘Grace and Frankie’ lead by the amazing Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda and ‘GLOW’ with their diverse female cast – Netflix has been pushing for more and more female-led (and created) web comedies. With the success of shows like ‘Fleabag’ and ‘Orange is the new Black’, OTTs around the world have now understood about the untapped market as well as “product” they have in their hands and Netflix continues to produce some brilliant women-centric TV shows.
Iliza Shlesinger’s ‘Good on Paper‘ looks to be a brilliant comedy series with a funny premise – A stand-up comedian, Andrea Singer meets a nice guy on her way between shows, who seems too good to be perfect. He is perfect in every sense and seems to have the right answer for everything (which ends up being too fishy in some cases), so Andrea and her best friend decide to get to the bottom of this “perfection”. Mae Martin’s ‘Feel Good’ on the other hand, released the trailer for its second and final trailer, a few hours ago (similar to ‘Good on Paper’). In this show, Mae Martin is a standup comedian, also called Mae, who is recovering from drug addiction. She meets a young English woman, George at one of her performances and they hit it off. But George comes from a conservative lifestyle and she finds it hard to introduce Mae into the people in her life. This along with her career pressure, Mae seems to be slowly going back into her old habits. Check out both trailers at the end of this article.
Iliza Shlesinger has three five shows already streaming on Netflix – four stand shows and one sketch comedy. ‘Good on Paper’ will be her first Netflix original web series and we can’t wait for the series to drop next month. Mae Martin’s ‘Feel Good‘ has already got one season streaming on Netflix and it is brilliant. We are disappointed that we will only get one more season featuring this brilliant comedian and we hope to see her in more projects soon.
Iliza Shlesinger’s ‘Good on Paper’ will premiere on Netflix on June 23rd 2021.
Mae Martin’s second and final season of ‘Feel Good’ will premiere on Netflix on June 4th 2021. As mentioned earlier, check out the comedy-drama series’ first season on Netflix as well.
