Netflix has unveiled the first set image from Cillian Murphy’s upcoming movie, Steve, in which he stars in and produces. The project serves as the official adaptation of Max Porter’s best-selling 2023 novella, Shy.
Murphy plays Steve, the headteacher of a school in the 1990s. In a desperate attempt to save their troubled school, headteacher Steve and his students at a reform college face a critical day in their fight against closure. The movie will not explore Steve’s mental health, but will also focus on the troubled teen Shy (played by Jay Lycurgo). Shy is caught between his past and his future, struggling to control his impulse for violence and self-destruction.

The production for Steve is set to wrap up on July 5. The film marks the first official movie production for Murphy’s Big Things Film, a production house which the Peaky Blinders actor co-founded with Alan Moloney. Murphy has worked with Moloney on “Small Things Like These”. Tim Mielants has helmed the movie.
Author Max Porter wrote the film’s screenplay. Murphy has worked with Porter on the stage adaptation of the latter’s “Grief is the Thing with Feathers”.
Netflix announced Steve back in February in collaboration with Big Things Film. The film’s other lead actor, Lycurgo, is best known for his work in “I May Destroy You”, “Titans”, and “Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself”. The streaming service is yet to reveal the release window for Steve. Stay tuned for more updates.
