Korean dystopian drama ‘Squid Game’ premiered on Netflix on September 17 this year. Within a week, the violence-laden series won the hearts of audiences and shot up to the top of the charts all over the world. While that is a good thing for Netflix, it had one unpleasant side effect. Squid Games’ success overshadowed everything that released on Netflix for a couple of subsequent weeks. Even very good shows flew under the radar and got lost in the Squid Games craze.
One such Netflix show that couldn’t get a word in edgewise in the Squid Games cacophony is French crime thriller, ‘Ganglands‘. The series, called in French as ‘Braqueurs: La série’ released on Netflix on September 24th, one week after Squid Games. It figures. The show initially did not make much noise. But it gained viewership slowly, picking up steam as Squid Games euphoria settled down a bit.
Suffice to say, Ganglands is a must-watch show for lovers of crime dramas. It is short – only 6 episodes long; has a refreshing premise; and is an entertaining watch. A good story always manages to find its way. Ganglands somehow got the recognition it deserves. Independent data from streaming analytics firm Flixpatrol suggests that Ganglands was viewed for over 54.5 million hours on Netflix between September 20th to October 10th.
It is no wonder then that Netflix has renewed Ganglands for Season 2. The news of the renewal dropped just now, and the makers of the show are suitably elated. Ganglands is created by Hamid Hlioua (La Revolution) and Julien Leclercq (Sentinelle).
Ganglands is a gripping crime drama centred on two criminals – Mehdi, a seasoned robber, and Liana, an apprentice thief. The show depicts how they get involved in a turf war between drug dealers and law-enforcement, while collaborating in order to save their loved ones.
So folks, if you love crime shows and haven’t caught up with Ganglands yet, go give it a watch now.
