Netflix Signs up Taika Waititi to Write-Direct Two Animated Series on the Iconic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’

Taika Waititi, Oscar-winner for the 2020 Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit, has been signed on by Netflix to write and direct two animated series on Roald Dahl’s iconic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. While one series will chronicle the original story based on the book, the other will focus on the Oompa Loompas, tiny fictional humans that work in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

The Oompa Loompa series will be an all-new story created by the makers, with maybe some part of it taking from the original book – such as them being invited to work at the chocolate factory by Willy Wonka.
Both series will be written and directed by Taika Waititi, who will also be the executive producer.

This will be the first of ongoing collaborations between Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company. To follow are collabs on Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, among others.

The two series announced yesterday will make notable additions to Netflix‘s burgeoning library of high-quality animated content.
