What may be considered highly obvious now, Netflix’s Squid Game will return for a second season. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator and the director of the biggest Netflix show of the year made this announcement last night during an interview. While there has been no official confirmation from Netflix yet, we do not think that the streaming platform will delay in making the announcement – especially for a show that doesn’t need a huge budget like any other Hollywood show and has over a 100 million views. The creator of the show also dropped a very subtle hint about the second season – check out the thirty second clip in the tweet down below:
As the director mentions at the very end – “Gi-hun will come back and he will do something for the world”. So first thing’s first – while the second season hasn’t fully materialized into a script just yet, the last season’s main protagonist, Seong Gi-hun, will be a part of it. In what capacity, is up for debate. Also, “doing something for the world” can mean a lot of things. It could mean that he is going to find a way to end the decades-long “Squid Games”. Or he could probably find some of the ultra-rich backers AKA the guests from the final episodes and force them to give their money to the people who participate in these games. Dong-hyuk has a lot of options available in front of him, to push the web series.
Whatever, the final product may be, we know that we are in for a treat. The first season ended in such a manner that it will require a completely new plotline and characters for the second season to take place. There is a very good chance that the genre of the series itself could change – from a horror thriller to a revenge thriller one. Unlike most shows that will end up repeating itself, this new season will need a whole new cast since most of the main characters from the first one were killed/died.
The first season of ‘Squid Game’ is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
