Netflix account and password sharing is a common practice across the world, and very prevalent in India. Though aware of the widespread sharing of Netflix passwords among friends, the streaming giant hasn’t been much bothered about it; until now, that is.
If Netflix has its way, soon, Netflix password sharing between friends and relatives that don’t live under the same roof will be a thing of the past. The streamer has begun testing a new feature where users have to confirm that they live in the same house as the Netflix account holder.
Over the past few days, many Netflix users, after logging into Netflix, have received this message on their screens – “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” The person logging in to watch Netflix is then required to confirm that they indeed live with the owner of the account, via an emailed or texted code to the account’s owner.
The user has an option to choose “verify later”, and continue watching for that period of time. But the next time they log in, the they are not allowed to watch unless they verify the above. As per Netflix, “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so”.
In effect, this is the first step taken by Netflix to crack down on password sharing of Netflix accounts. The feature is being tested in limited accounts as of now. If successful, we could see the new feature become a norm for all Netflix account holders.
