Netflix have been increasing their efforts in creating original anime to stream for an international fanbase, either by procuring the rights to create anime or by producing their own original Netflix anime projects. But it seems that Netflix has the end game in mind and has already started branching out from just creating original anime to making spin-offs and more importantly, live-action adaptations. Netflix has been slowly procuring the rights for creating live-action adaptations for multiple anime films and series, having gained confidence from the huge recent positive reaction from the fans for their anime efforts.
Netflix had already been creating live-action web series adaptations for popular web series like ‘Cowboy Bebop’, ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and ‘Sword Art Online’, but recently they have taken up an interesting new project for a live action adaptation in the form of a web series – the fan-favourite ‘One Piece’. Once called “One of The Big Three”, alongside anime giants Naruto and Bleach, ‘One Piece’ is the only anime series that remains and is still considered to be one of the best long-mangas written/ anime series created. So a ‘One Piece’ web series sounds very exciting.
The live-action web series was actually undergoing filming when the pandemic struck back in 2020 but now, the shooting is back on track. The series is still in its codename stage of filming, so there isn’t a set title yet for the TV show – except for the codename “Project Roger”. To many ‘One Piece’ fans, this is a not-so-subtle nod to the pirate king in the manga and anime series – Gol D. Roger.
It is good to see that Netflix is not resting on their laurels when it comes to their anime adaptations and have quickly moved on to their next goal of creating original live-action adaptations. Now if only they could replicate this success with their original Indian regional content.
