Netflix’s The Dig: A Delicious Slice Of Thrilling History

Netflix’s slate for 2021 January is almost out and one of the movies included in that is “The Dig”. Releasing on a limited basis on 15th of January and streaming online on Netflix from the 29th of January, The Dig is a period drama based in England and during the onset of the war that was looming heavily all over the world. The movie stars academy award winners and nominees and is based on real life events in England back in 1939. The movie is actually based on the 2007 novel of the same name by John Preston which records the events of the discovery from the early period.

The movie goes through the events of how a woman finds something in her backyard and later when she teams up with a few archaeologists, they come to know that there is something that dates back to the dark ages. It is considered to be one of a kind “find” in historical terms. With the war ready to take place at any moment, things get harder for them to keep it under wraps. They wanted to protect it from the government. They wanted for the officials not to find it as that would lead them nowhere. Later, at the excavation after hours and rigorous digging, they come up with a battleship that has been perfectly preserved underground and is believed to be Anglo-Saxon in origin.

The actual burial site is called Sutton Hoo and was discovered on the property of Edith Pretty and now the particulars are being held in a museum in England. The movie stars Carey Mullighan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn and more. The Dig is directed by Simon Stone.
