The eccentric chocolate maker, Willy Wonka, has found a new way to entertain the audience, this time through a reality competition series. As per Deadline, Netflix will develop a reality game show based on the Roald Dahl story of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. This news comes after the streaming giant acquired the Roald Dahl Company in 2021.
The iconic character of Willy Wonka has been portrayed by Gene Wilder, Johnny Depp, and Timothee Chalamet. Wilder and Depp played the same character in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Chalamet got the opportunity to play the protagonist’s younger version in last year’s Wonka, which focused on the character’s early days as a chocolatier.
Netflix reportedly went out to several production companies for the development of the reality competition series, including Wall to Wall, Fremantle, Nobody’s Hero, and The Garden. Wall to Wall (best known for “Who Do You Think You Are?”) and Fremantle (popular for producing “American Idol”) are rumoured to be battling it out for the show. Although, the former production company is a property of Warner Bros Discovery. If the series lands at Wall to Wall, then we may see a deal between Netflix and WBD in the future to continue the show.
Netflix has not yet revealed the release window for its Willy Wonka reality competition series. We will inform you about it soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
