Manjari Makijany’s directorial début film Desert Dolphin’s global rights have been acquired by Netflix. The film is a coming-of-age drama of a teen girl in rural India, whose life changes when she learns a new sport.
The story revolves around Prerna, a teenager who lives in a village in India. She gets introduced to skateboarding but given the society she lives in it won’t be easy for her to pursue her dreams. However, she has to fight the odds in order to compete in the national championship.
Desert Dolphin skatepark was created for the film with the help of national and international skate volunteers. The park which is free for public usage still exists in a cluster of rural villages in Khempur-Mavli district near Udaipur. Such parks have immense social impact on the rural communities. It’s one of India’s largest and Rajasthan’s first skatepark that is becoming a training ground for skaters from all over the country.
Desert Dolphin will mark the acting début of Rachel Saanchita Gupta and Shafin Patel. The film also features Amrit Maghera and legendary Indian actor Waheeda Rehman in pivotal roles. Music for the film has been composed by Salim-Sulaiman and has been produced by Skatepark Films and Mac Productions.
Desert Dolphin will premiere on Netflix sometime later next year. It will join the list of other live action family films featuring kids and teens like Feel the Beat, WWE’s The Main Event and 2019 comedy Tall Girl. Other than Desert Dolphin upcoming Netflix films in this category include The Sleepover, Finding Ohana, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting and A Week Away.
