Netflix’s 1899: Biggest Drawback For New Show From ‘Dark’ Makers

Netflix‘s upcoming show ‘1899’ premieres on the streaming behemoth on November 17 worldwide. As Netflix followers will know, ‘1899’ is the next offering from the makers of ‘Dark’. And you’ll also know that ‘Dark’ is inarguably the most successful, most hyped, topmost-rated show from Netflix.

But guess what? 1899‘s connection with ‘Dark’ is proving to be a major drawback for the new show. Since ‘1899’ comes from the same makers of Dark, it is obvious that it will be the brunt of comparisons with the latter. And we all know what happens when a new show – a decidedly unknown quantity – is subjected to comparisons with an old favourite, and that too a show that has gained a massive cult following across the world.

Looks like ‘1899’ will be crushed under the “unbearable weight of massive talent” – the cult of ‘Dark’. Already, buzz for ‘1899’ is waning among OTT audiences. Comparisons with ‘Dark’ will prove to be the final nail in its coffin.

We hope, for 1899 and Netflix’s sake, that we are proved wrong on that last statement.

The story of 1899 is set in the early 20th century. A passenger ship takes off on its journey from London to New York. On board are immigrants of different countries, cultures and ethnicities, on their way to America, the land of opportunities. However, their journey is cut short when they encounter a passenger ship on the high seas. The ship turns out to be the one that disappeared without a trace several ago and appears out of the blue in the middle of the ocean.

1899 is created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the creators of the mind-bending German blockbuster show ‘Dark’. 1899 arrives on Netflix worldwide on November 17, 2022.
