Netflix has dropped a new mature-rated trailer for Peter Berg’s upcoming western series, American Primeval. Led by Taylor Kitsch, the series explores the fight to gain control of the American West during the year 1857, and the clashes that took place in the name of culture and religion. The trailer looks grimmer, bloodier, and more violent than previous promotional clips for the show. In fact, the show overall looks more violent than all the seasons of Yellowstone combined.
Starring alongside Kitsch are Saura Lightfoot Leon, Jai Courtney, Kim Coates, Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, and Dane DeHaan.
American Primeval shares similarities with Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant (2015), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, particularly in terms of action and cinematography. This may be because the series features Mark L. Smith as the writer, who also wrote The Revenant.
The upcoming Western drama will consist of six episodes, offering a fictionalised exploration of the bloody conflict over community, religion, and culture in the Old West. The limited series is set to premiere on Netflix on January 9.
The series’ leading man, Kitsch, is best known for his roles in major films such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, John Carter, Battleship, Savages, Lone Survivor, American Assassin, and Only the Brave. He previously collaborated with Berg on Lone Survivor.
