The follow-up to Keanu Reeves’ 47 Ronin, titled ‘Blade of the 47 Ronin’, is set to drop onto Netflix. According to Variety, the upcoming sequel will have some new female characters and address the Asian cultural criticisms that plagued the first entry.
47 Ronin (2013) was a major financial disaster after earning nearly $151 million against its mammoth budget of $175-225 million. This drastic scenario left Universal in the red that year. So, it makes sense why the studio is releasing the sequel on Netflix instead of giving it a wide theatrical release.
Blade of the 47 Ronin: Plot
The sequel will take place 300 years after the events of the first film, in a modern-day world where all the Samurai clans live in complete secrecy. An important meeting of the five Samurai clans takes place in Budapest. Apart from them, a trio of Onna Bugeisha (Women warriors) also attend the meeting. The male leaders initially display their resentment towards this situation. And this is where everything turns upside down for all the Samurai clans.
Blade of the 47 Ronin: Cast
The forthcoming flick consists of an entirely new cast, led by Anna Akana. Apart from her, we have talents like Mark Dacascos, Teresa Ting, Mike Moh, Dustin Nguyen, Chris Pang, and Yoshi Sudarso. Prominent martial artist and stunt choreographer, Ron Yuan, has helmed the project.
When will it release?
‘Blade of the 47 Ronin’ will release on Netflix on October 25. Universal Studios produced the film under its 1440 Productions unit for the streaming service. Stay tuned for more updates.
