The much-loved martial arts comedy-drama series has again joined the exclusive above-the-100-million-hours-viewed club in the first three days of streaming of Season 5. It generated 106.7 million hours, an impressive however lower than the start of Season 4 which had debuted at 120 million hours.
The fifth season of ‘Cobra Kai’ was released on Netflix on September 9, 2022, and consisted of 10 episodes. The series is a direct sequel to the original four films in The Karate Kid franchise, focusing on the characters of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence over 30 years after the original film. The season has twelve starring roles, eleven of which returned from the previous season.
‘Cobra Kai’ continues the original Karate Kid saga, last seen in ‘The Next Karate Kid’ (1994). In particular, it re-examines the “Miyagi-Verse” narrative from Johnny’s (William Zabka) point of view, his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel (Ralph Macchio).
The series’ first two seasons initially debuted on Youtube Red. After the production of season three was completed, YouTube decided to stop producing scripted original programming, leaving the show without a home. Netflix acquired the series in June 2020, and therefore, began releasing new seasons on their platform.
Season 5 is the third season to be released on Netflix. It received a positive response from critics and an impressive Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 100%. With the numbers its raking, the fans are hopeful ‘Cobra Kai’ will return for a sixth season.
