Netflix’s Disclosure: Shedding Light on Transgender Representation

Netflix’s Disclosure is a Netflix documentary where the top creators and personalities of the transgender community tell us about their perspective and analysis of Hollywood’s impact on the trans community.
Netflix has always gone where very few people would even like to venture, but it is good when they try to throw light and help some of the underrepresented portions of our society. Trans people have existed in various sectors, including the entertainment industry for over 100 years now.

Famous personalities come on camera as they talk about how the earlier films represented the trans community and their absolute dismay towards it. They criticize various personalities for showing the trans community either as a joke or hazard to society when, in reality, they are only another part of society that sometimes get misunderstood.

Tired of the clumsy representation of the community these personalities ask for better, and that is the underlying message that Netflix’s Disclosure is trying to spread out to the masses. According to a study from GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), more than 80% people do not know someone who is transgender which is the primary reason why there is so much stigma and taboo against them.

How the trans community has been represented is that they are mentally ill or that they do not exist as a section in society. This documentary is mainly aimed to break that stereotype which has been harnessed due to ignorance or lack of understanding.

Netflix’s Disclosure is now streaming exclusively on its platform.
