The time has finally come! We are just one day away from the release of Netflix’s anthology series ‘Navarasa’ tomorrow! Created by Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan, the 9 part anthology series, based on the 9 emotions/rasas, marks the coming together of 9 Kollywood directors, namely Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyadarshan, Karthik Subbaraj, Vasanth S. Sai, Karthick Naren, Sarjun KM, Rathindran R. Prasad and Arvind Swamy, who makes his directorial debut. Embarking on this journey of bringing each rasa to life, is a magnificent ensemble cast featuring Suriya, Vijay Sethupathi, Prasanna, Revathi, Aditi Balan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Prakash Raj, Siddharth, Delhi Ganesh, Prayaga Martin, Yogi Babu and Arvind Swamy himself, amongst others.
The makers have been releasing one poster each day as part of the #9daysofNavarasa Twitter trend that ended today, with all 9 posters out. This strategy has worked well to create uncontrollable excitement in the fans for the highly anticipated show.
Earlier this week, the makers announced a musical celebration for today, with the caption- “Set your reminders to embark on a musical journey celebrating the nine emotions with the cast and crew of #Navarasa this Thursday! Marakkama Vaanga! #SymphonyOfEmotions”. Well, the day is finally here and this symphony will unfold before us at 6.55pm so stay tuned!
The music and background score has been put together by 9 composers, namely- A. R Rahman, Santhosh Narayanan, Sundaramurthy KS, Rajesh Murugesan, Karthik, Ron Ethan Yohann, Govind Vasantha, Justin Prabhakaran and Vishal Bhardwaj. There are a total of 9 songs in the series, the first being the ‘Navarasa Theme’, composed by A.R. Rahman, that was revealed in the anthology’s teaser.
Bejoy Nambiar’s segment exploring the emotion of Compassion, is titled ‘Edhiri’ (meaning Enemy). It stars Vijay Sethupathi and Revathi in the lead along with Ashok Selvan and Prakash Raj in supporting roles. Sethupathi will be making his digital debut with this project. Govind Vasantha’s (of ’96 fame) song ‘Yaadho’, in Chinmayi’s voice was composed for this short.
Gautham Menon’s short segment, titled ‘Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru’, features Suriya and Prayaga Martin in the lead and explores the emotion of Love. This musical segment has 4 tracks, ‘Thooriga’, ‘Alai Alaiyaaga’, ‘Naanum’, and ‘Adhirudha’, by singer-turned-composer Karthik, who has also previously composed for the Netflix series ‘Paava Kadhaigal’.
In the segment directed by Rathindran R. Prasad, Siddharth and Parvathy will be seen in ‘Inmai’, exploring the emotion of Fear. The story of a woman who receives an unknown visitor at her doorstep, the portion promises to be a deep dive psychological thriller that will have audiences racking their brains.
The segment directed by Priyadarshan titled ‘Summer of 92’, features comedian Yogi Babu and Ramya Nambessan in the lead. It is reportedly based on a true story and explores the emotions of Laughter and Joy. Rajesh Murugesan has put together the background score for this short.
Karthick Naren’s portion is a sci-fi drama, titled ‘Project Agni’, that explores the emotion of Wonder. It stars Arvind Swami and Prasanna in the lead, and the background score has been composed by Ron Ethan Yohann.
Arvind Swami makes his directorial debut with the segment titled ‘Rowthiram’, featuring Rythvika in the lead role of a cop. This portion explores the emotion of Anger and has no songs.
Director Sarjun’s segment starring Atharvaa Murali and Anjali in the lead, is titled ‘Thunintha Pin’ and explores the emotion of Courage. The music score for this episode has been composed by Sundaramurthy KS, featuring the songs ‘The Bleeding Heart-Osara Parandhu Vaa’ and ‘The Comrade Theme’.
Karthik Subbaraj’s segment ‘Peace’ is reportedly based on LTTE and stars Bobby Simhaa and Gautham Menon in key roles exploring the emotion of Peace. Santhosh Narayanan has composed the background score for this segment.
Vasanth Sai directed segment ‘Payasam’, that explores the emotion of Disgust, stars Aditi Balan in the lead with Delhi Ganesh and Rohini in supporting roles. The melodious, classical song ‘Kannunjal’ from this segment has been composed by Justin Prabhakaran (of ‘Dear Comrade’ fame).
This anthology series is a one-of-its-kind initiative aimed at raising funds and extending support to the Tamil film fraternity impacted by the pandemic. Reportedly, none of the actors and directors have charged any remuneration for their work in the series and all the proceeds from the project will be donated to this cause. ‘Navarasa’ is set to premiere on Netflix on 6th August.
