Netflix’s Newest Taiwanese Original Is A Nerve-Wracking Thriller!

‘Detention: The Series’ becomes the latest to be added in the library of Netflix’s Chinese language original series from Taiwan. The original story of ‘Detention: The Series’ is based on a instant and lasting hit 2017 Taiwanese adventure game of the same name by Red Candle Games. This new series will launch on Netflix on December 5.

This latest Netflix show is a flagship psychological thriller series from Taiwan Public Television Service (PTS) and is inspired from the White Terror Era (1949 – 1987) in Taiwan. The series “entwines the suffocating political situations under martial law and heart-stopping legends of local deities, portraying a labyrinth of unspeakable oppressions.”

As per official synopsis by Netflix, “Detention: The Series starts at Greenwood High School in the 1990s. Yunxiang Liu (played by Lingwei Lee), a transfer student, steps into the forbidden area on the campus by accident, where she encounters the ghost of Ruixin Fang (Ning Han). Fang later unveils the hidden history and trauma over the past 30 years, and how a group of young students and teachers were persecuted as they fought for freedom in the era of censorship. Their stories keep coming back to the school like haunting nightmares, waiting to be told and revealed.”

‘Detention: The Series’ has been directed by I-Hsuan Su, Shiang-An Chuang, Yi Liu and stars Ling-Wei Lee, Ning Han, Guang-Zi Huan, Yao-Chun Yao, David Chao. Presented by Taiwan PTS, Outland Film Production is the production company for the Netflix series. It has been produced by Shih-Ken Lin, I-Ling Lin.

‘Detention: The Series’ has also been adapted into a live action film which received five major awards from 2019 Golden Horse Awards including the Best Adapted Screenplay.

The eight-part series will premiere globally on Netflix on 5th December, 2020 with one episode coming weekly on every Saturday.
