Netflix is gearing up to premiere its latest project from Higher Ground, the Obamas’ production company, and it is a documentary called ‘Becoming’, based on the best-selling book of the same name by former First Lady, Michelle Obama.
The documentary feature will be directed by Nadia Hallgren, a well-known filmmaker and cinematographer in the film industry. She was also DP on Oscar-nominated Trouble the Water, Girl Rising and Motherland.
The documentary will chronicle Michelle Obama’s nationwide promotional tour for her best-selling book Becoming, in which she covered 34 cities. It will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes takes, introducing viewers to intriguing anecdotes and responses from the tour.
Becoming is the third offering from the Obamas’ production banner Higher Ground, as part of the deal signed in 2018 by Barrack and Michelle Obama with Netflix.
The first was the documentary film ‘American Factory’, which won the Award for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards 2020. The second was the highly-acclaimed Crip Camp, which introduced viewers to a special summer camp for teens with disabilities.
Shared Michelle Obama, about Becoming, “Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud.”
“I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, tend to our communities, and try to keep up with work and school while coping with huge amounts of loss, confusion, and uncertainty,” she added.
‘Becoming’ premieres worldwide on Netflix on 6th May 2020.
