Netflix is putting a lot of effort into uplifting its animation department. It is clearly visible in the latest official trailer of Nimona. The upcoming animated feature seems like a masterful blend of adventure and fantasy, set to arrive on the streaming platform this summer. It is based on ND Stevenson’s graphic novel of the same name.
The film revolves around a young shapeshifter, Nimona, who can acquire the shape of any animal. She discovers that Ballister Blackheart is being hunted for the Queen’s murder. Only Nimona believes that he is innocent. Sometime later, she becomes his sidekick and helps prove his innocence. However, things get complicated after Ambrosius, a former friend of Ballister, also starts hunting him.
Nimona’s latest clip shows a lot and proves that the titular character is anything except a princess in jeopardy. She also displays her intense attitude and fighting spirit.
In 2015, 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to Stevenson’s graphic novel and chose one of its subsidiaries, Blue Sky Studios, for its animated film adaptation. The studio revealed to release the animated project in February 2020, a couple of years after acquiring its rights. However, things went south after Disney acquired Fox and its subsidiaries, including Blue Sky Studios. Soon, the studio announced it was shutting down Blue Sky. As a result, Nimona got buried. In 2022, Annapurna Pictures struck a deal with Netflix to release Nimona.
Helmed by Troy Quane and Nick Bruno, Nimona stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Frances Conroy, Eugene Lee Yang, Beck Bennett, Lorraine Toussaint, and more. It will release on Netflix on June 30. Stay tuned for more updates.
