Netflix’s One Piece Remake Could Outperform The Main Anime Series

Netflix shocked the anime fanbase when it announced the remake of the classic One Piece series at this year’s Jump Festa. It seems like the streaming giant can’t get enough of Eiichiro Oda’s work. The live-action One Piece from the service became a worldwide sensation, gaining the top spot in over 86 countries in terms of viewership and receiving over 140 million hours of viewing in its debut weekend. As for the main anime series by Toei Animation, that project is still running strong and has bestowed over 1,000 episodes to its fans. It has entertained the viewers for over 23 years and has developed a gigantic fanbase. However, it does not mean that it is completely flawless. The original anime does have some problems, which Netflix’s upcoming remake can fix.

During this year’s Jump Festa, Netflix released a special announcement clip for its One Piece remake.

Since its debut, the original One Piece anime has forged a strong and substantial fanbase. But even some of the anime’s die-hard fans have admitted that the series is not flawless. For instance, it is notorious for its slow pacing and overreliance on slow-motion scenes. In addition, some episodes have suffered from overlong monologues and prolonged reactions. Another thing that is quite irritating about the anime is that many of its episodes waste the first five minutes on recaps. Not only do these scenarios affect the series’ momentum, but they also end up stretching many storylines.

Extended story arcs are often considered a double-edged sword. In the case of One Piece, they have mostly worked as a ‘hype-killer.’ The anime series has suffered from many grand arcs that have outstayed their welcome, such as the Skypeia arc.

The main anime series has also faced fans’ wrath for turning top characters into jokes. For instance, characters like Usopp and Sanji initially seemed intriguing due to their unique perspectives, diverse lifestyles, compelling background stories, and idiosyncratic goals. These characters, possessing multilayered and complex personas, were considered interesting at the time. Now, they are nothing more than laughing stocks or medium of comic relief.

WIT Studio will monitor Netflix’s remake of the One Piece anime. Not many anime studios, except WIT Studio, can do justice to Eiichiro Oda’s source material and the original anime series. This scenario gives the Japanese anime studio a perfect opportunity to correct the mistakes of the main One Piece series.

Netflix has not yet revealed the release window of its One Piece remake. Stay tuned for more updates.
