More updates about Netflix’s sequel to the iconic One Tree Hill series have surfaced, thanks to original cast member Hilarie Burton. She, along with another well-known face from the original series (2003–2012), Sophia Bush, are serving as executive producers for the forthcoming sequel and may reprise their respective roles as Peyton Sawyer and Brooke Davis.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, while promoting her new horror film Bloody Axe Wound, Burton discussed the One Tree Hill sequel. However, she cautioned the interviewer that the revival is still in the early stages of development and has yet to receive official approval from Netflix.
“We were very, very lucky that we got a showrunner, Becky Hartman Edwards, who is so experienced, and her ability to connect with her writers’ room, the people on set, all the actors, she is magical at that. So, we get to be hands off in that capacity and really be more on the business side of things. You know, “How are we going to go back to Wilmington, North Carolina, and have it feel like the good old days, but also be new and fresh for a brand new audience?” So, we’re in the very, very, very early stages. Nothing is greenlit at this point, but I know it’s being presented, and I believe in it, and I’m proud of it, and I love that family of people, so fingers crossed. If it goes, I think everyone will be in a really good place.”
Becky Hartman Edwards will serve as the sequel’s showrunner. She is best known for her work on prominent shows like Sex and the City, Life on Mars, My Life with the Walter Boys, Virgin River, and more.
Burton’s comments confirm that the One Tree Hill sequel will take place in the familiar setting of Wilmington, North Carolina. However, it remains unclear which actors will reprise their roles from the original series. Nathan Scott (played by James Lafferty), the series’ main protagonist, appeared in all nine seasons. Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) was another major character and Nathan’s half-brother. Murray co-led the show with Lafferty until his departure after Season 6, though he made a cameo appearance in Season 9.
One Tree Hill follows the lives of two estranged half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, who compete for basketball glory and the affections of the same girl, Peyton Sawyer, while navigating the complexities of family, friendship, and love in the small town of Tree Hill, North Carolina.
The One Tree Hill sequel is still in early development, so the list of returning cast members and even Netflix’s decision to greenlight the show could change. However, early progress seems positive, and this project has the potential to explore new directions. Stay tuned for more updates.
