Netflix’s Over-dependence On Licensed Films Good For The Platform?

Netflix India has made a great improvement in terms of its viewer base and quality of contents. The movies and shows from Netflix have been loved by audiences and the platform has made it to the top few OTT platforms in India as well as all over the world.

One big reason behind the success of Netflix in India and its increase in the subscriber count is its streaming of licensed films. Netflix India has streamed a lot of licensed films this year and we can say that their success is quite enviable.

Many movies like ‘Darlings‘ were previously planned for a theatrical release but they came to Netflix as direct-to-ott releases. They are not made by Netflix, and so they are not Netflix Originals. Originals like ‘Qala’, ‘Monica, O My Darling’ were hugely popular among audiences, the unique storytelling of both the films stunned and amazed everybody. Shows like ‘Khakee‘ and ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ were popular too.

But the way Netflix originals are focused on globally, it seems like they are not given that much importance in India. Gaining the streaming rights of theatrical releases and streaming them on the platform is a plus point for Netflix but it is also a limiting factor. It gains the platform views, owing to the huge popularity of the films but it limits the chances of betterment of original movies and shows.

The most popular movies of 2022 on Netflix India include ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, ‘RRR’ and all of these were theatrical releases. Maybe Netflix India should focus more on original movies and shows in 2023 so that we can have more movies like Qala and Monica that are unique both in style and execution.
