Japan’s latest TV series export, ‘The Naked Director‘, which is a Netflix original web series, dropped the trailer for its upcoming second season, a few hours ago. This brilliant adult series pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable to be shown in Japanese porn, be it in a magazine or video; Japan was well known (and still is) to be strict with the content coming out of the adult media industry. Back in 2019, a Japanese semi-biographical comedy series dropped on Netflix without the knowledge of most OTT subscribers within the country. But thanks to the internet and good reviews, that slowly changed at it attracted subscribers from all over the globe (India included). This series was based on Toru Muranishi, a Japanese adult video director, who went on to be a legend in his industry. Muranishi changed the way adult videos were shot in Japan, created plots in his movies and pushed the boundaries of censorship within his videos.
The first season of ‘The Naked Director’ focuses on him changing his career paths and discovering that adult videos were his passion. Set in the early 1980s, the director then went on to discover the famous Japanese adult video performer, Kaoru Kuroki. The first eight episodes also show his first (in) famous arrest and his run-ins with the porn industry tycoons who didn’t like what he was doing to the industry.
The second season kicks off with Muranishi having sold 100 thousand videos for over a billion yen (Rupees 69.5 crore), not even counting inflation (wow). In the trailer, Muranishi is trying to find new ways to push the envelop, with the director looking at new models and actresses to make his videos even bigger. But he has found his latest expansion project – satellite broadcasting.
The series has come under fire, however, for glorifying the misogyny in the Japanese adult industry and Muranishi never held any true remorse for how he treated the women under his employment. The series was based on the non-fiction novel, Zenra Kantoku Muranishi Toru Den by Nobuhiro Motohashi. The series has taken a few liberties, which can be seen in the series, but it is a good watch and the acting is quite good.
The second season of ‘The Naked Director‘ will come out on June 24th, 2021 on Netflix. The first season is available for streaming on the OTT platform.
