The Sandman debuted on Netflix in August last year. Both critics and fans welcomed Neil Gaiman’s creation with open arms. The streaming giant took some time to renew the show for a second season. And multiple reports have confirmed that filming for Season 2 is underway.
We do not know how many episodes Season 2 will have. Announcements regarding new additions to the show’s cast are yet to surface on the internet. So, it is safe to assume that all of its main cast members will appear in the upcoming season, including Tom Sturridge (Dream), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Jenna Coleman (Johanna Constantine), Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Death), Patton Oswalt (as the voice of Matthew the Raven), and more.
Season 2 will introduce four new characters: Wanda, Destruction, Destiny, and Delirium. Netflix is yet to reveal who has been cast in these roles.
The filming is currently taking place at Durdle Door in Dorset, England.
The ongoing WGA strike has halted the productions of many movies and TV shows. Writers are strongly demanding for better job security, improved funding, and bigger writers’ rooms. In addition, concerns have been raised regarding the utilisation of AI in production works. Sandman creator Neil Gaiman has also shown his support to the writers.
As a result of the strike, the filming for The Sandman Season 2 will start without having writers on set. The scripts for the second season were submitted at the end of this May, which enabled Netflix to commence the filming.
Gaiman has openly admitted that the ongoing WGA strike will adversely impact The Sandman Season 2 in his response to a fan’s question on Tumblr. “Absolutely, it will have a negative effect on the promotion and success of Good Omens, just as it will have a negative effect on Anansi Boys (which has gone to “picture lock” on all six episodes without me signing off on the edits) and on Sandman (which will be shooting without anyone rewriting the scripts, which were frozen as of May 31st). But it’s worth it.”
The Sandman Season 2 is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
