Netflix has a brilliant array of chilling true crime documentaries – be it in series format or in film and their latest documentary film, ‘Why Did You Kill Me?’ fits just right in. This original Netflix true crime documentary follows a grieving woman and her niece as they track down her daughter’s killer after the trailer goes too cold for the police to continue investigating. The trailer for this documentary dropped yesterday on Netflix’s official YouTube Channel – check it out, at the end of this article.
In 2006, Crystal Theobald, a 24-year old was brutally killed in a 2006 drive-by gang related shooting in California. Later it came out that neither she nor the people she was close to were involved with gangs in any way. All-in-all it looked like Crystal was at the wrong place at the wrong time and with no idea who was involved, the case went cold. Slowly, the police had to move on as Crystal’s case grew cold and other open cases kept piling up.
But that was never enough for Belinda Lane, the mother of the deceased Crystal. When she found out that the gang involved had accounts on Myspace, she decided to “catfish” the gang members with the help of her niece, Jaime, who was “Myspace-savvy” at the time. Using the picture of her dead daughter, they made an account called Angel and started messaging the men. They immediately got responses and with the police report they had, both aunt and niece started to build their case up from there. The trailer for this documentary gives a better account of what they did.
Eventually the killers were found, but to know about the whole story you will have to watch the documentary when it comes out next week, on April 14th 2021.
