Amazon Studios has just given the go-ahead to another spinoff of its successful ‘Bosch’ series. The as-yet-untitled series has been announced close on the heels of the season finale of Bosch: Legacy Season 2, the first spinoff series of Bosch. While Bosch and Bosch: Legacy both follow the escapades of maverick LAPD detective Harry Bosch, the new spinoff series will centre on his fellow LAPD cop, Detective Renée Ballard.
Actor Titus Welliver has portrayed Harry Bosch in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. It’s unclear who will land the role of Detective Renée Ballard in the spinoff series. Like Bosch, the new series will also be set in the universe of Michael Connelly’s wildly successful police procedural novels.
Incidentally, the Renée Ballard spinoff is not the only series in development from the Bosch universe. Another Bosch spinoff series in the works at Amazon Prime is centred on Detective II Jerome “Jerry” Edgar, Harry Bosch’s comrade-in-arms and partner. The character is played by Jamie Hector in Bosch, with a guest appearance by him in Bosch: Legacy.
Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood will serve as showrunners on the Renée Ballard series. The official synopsis of the untitled series reads – “Detective Renée Ballard is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division—a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.”
