New Controversy: Is Laapata Ladies Copied From A 1999 Telefilm?

A new controversy Is rising up as some netizens have pointed out that the highly acclaimed film ‘Laapata Ladies’ is actually copied from Ananth Mahadevan’s 1999 movie ‘Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol’ which was released on Doordarshan Gold under the Director’s cut series.

‘Laapata Ladies’ is written and directed by Kiran Rao and has been Lauded by critics and audiences for the intricate craft of the film and superb execution. The film’s subtle dealing with patriarchy and misogyny has won over audiences from all over India. It has also surpassed the popular ‘Animal’ in views on Netflix. But now, all this glory seems useless, as there are allegations that the whole story and subject of the film has been copied. The people who are finding this out through social media posts are standing in solidarity with Mr. Mahadevan, who himself has pointed this out and accused the makers of plagiarism. Kiran Rao and producer Aamir Khan are now being seen as mouthpieces of Bollywood, an industry that has been guilty of many cases of plagiarism and illegitimate remakes. Only a few days back they were being praised for the strong statement and execution of their film Laapata Ladies.

Ananth Mahadevan’s film itself was inspired from the plot of ‘Noukadubi’ by Rabindranath Tagore, which reflects strongly in Laapata Ladies as well. Ananth Mahadevan is a Veteran screenwriter and filmmaker who has also acted in a few movies. His most popular directing credits are ‘Gour Hari Dastaan’, ‘Aksar’ and ‘Dil Mange More’. The movie ‘Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol’ was available to watch on YouTube, but during the release of ‘Laapata Ladies’ it has been removed from YouTube as well.
