After 2020, the OTT industry saw a massive change in not only the growth of subscribers, but also the change in content available and the amount of it available. Along with that, as people dived deeper and deeper into the world of OTT more, they started finding more and more ways of making the experience of it worthwhile. With the advancement in technology people started looking for better ways to enjoy the content available in the click of our fingertips. As the lockdown imposed theatres to shut down, people found a theatre in their own homes.
People started to look for 4K content, HD quality sound and picture, gladly some OTT didn’t disappoint at all. On the other hand some content most definitely needs to up their game of not only bringing “quality” content, but also better the quality of the content that is being streamed by people all over. This includes two most important aspects, the video quality and also the sound quality. Though most of the time, this also depends on the devices that are being used to stream the content. But an option for better quality never really harms anyone.
Netflix has taken this pretty seriously. Not only have they improved the video quality over the years but a recent update also improved the sound quality for the streaming app. This has been pretty recent, but they have been trying with it since last year and especially for people with Androids. The recent update helps the streaming site in managing the controls and ranges of audio and also helps in managing loudness in between scenes. Netflix has reported that it has updated to help stream the content with Extended HE-AAC with MPEG-D DRC audio extensions on compatible Android devices (Android 9.0 and above).
To non-geeky and techy people like us, this might feel like an alien language. So, if we compare in normal terms, we can use the example of how we have loved the sound systems of movie halls and how it differs from hall to hall. Same is the case with this update, we might not directly be affected by it but with time, we will most definitely see the differences here and there, just like how all of us know to adjust the settings of viewing quality. This will be different, as this will be more connected to how we listen everything.
Netflix has also mentioned that when loudness management is turned on and someone has found their comfortable level of sound, they might not need to keep on changing the audio settings after that. Loudness management helps in setting a comfortable range of sound for all the content that is being streamed on the app. People don’t have to keep on adjusting their volumes with each passing episode of a certain series or even in-between series.
These changes are important as this brings better profit for everyone and also helps in getting more people into the streaming site by tempting them with such technologically advanced settings. Who wouldn’t like to watch something, where they don’t have to constantly keep adjusting the volume button? This might be just the beginning in changes of the technologies issues in this brand new era of OTT.
