New Super Mario Movie: Internet After Chris Pratt Again!

The upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie’s first trailer was just released on social media. The trailer shows the introductions of Bowser, the main antagonist, and also Chris Pratt’s Mario sliding out of a large pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom. Hilarious and with great animation, the film promises to be an engaging watch for a regular moviegoer.

The yet-untitled Super Mario movie is one of the most anticipated movies of next year. Led by Pratt the project boasts of an ensemble voice cast featuring Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach) Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong), Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) and Sebastian Maniscalco (Spike).

The trailer’s visuals and animation have been drawing praise, along with Jack Black’s voice-over of Bowser. What has left Twitter divided is Chris Pratt’s rendition of Mario. It seems he didn’t even try to bring out an accent while playing the Italian plumber character. While some fans were left disappointed and opined that Chris Pratt is not the right cast for the job, others felt he was bringing his own voice and rendition which they felt was a good fit.

All being said and done, for a normal audience, the trailer seemed solid. Visually stunning and with some well-known characters bringing back the nostalgia of the game, it seems like a solid watch, especially for the family audience. The movie may be the next Angry Birds if done right, with plans reportedly already in place for more sequels.

Very few film adaptations of popular games have been successful and expectations are for Super Mario to get into the coveted club. For the film, Nintendo is teaming up with Illumination, the animation house behind Minions. The movie is set to release in the US on April 7, 2023. The Indian release date is yet to be announced.
