Next Steps For India’s Zee Chief Punit Goenka Post Merger Failure

Punit Goenka, the MD and CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL), is poised to take a guiding stride by assuming a leadership role within the broadcasting division of the entity. This is in lieu of Sony’s recent decision to end its relations in merging TV and streaming avenues in India, which lasted for 2 years.

This merger also had certain legalities surrounding it in the previous year, with there being allegations of insider trading, and a government investigatory probe had been conducted for the same as well, as Punit as well as ex officio member Subhash Chandra were not allowed to hold any authoritative positions within the specified companies. The original merger consisted of Goenka leading the joint venture and Sony owning 51% of the stake. It was also brought to notice that quite a few investors had come forward, but Punit and his teams only concern and objective is to cater to the shareholders.

The end of Sony’s merger has brought about a recalibration of employee structure within ZEEL, as Goenka is now directly involved in the revenue aspect of things, with multiple other officials reporting to him as well.
