This evening, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Sanjay Dhotre submitted a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, clearly stating that the government will not curb the freedom of expression of digital content creators.
The minister wrote:
“Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has no plans to introduce censorship on the content appearing on online streaming platforms. The government is committed to freedom of speech and expression and privacy of its citizens as enshrined in the Constitution of India.”
The minister’s statement comes as a welcome relief for digital players, who have faced the heat of disgruntled viewers filing petitions and PILs in numerous courts across the country against one or the other show, thus compelling the government to put out a clear statement.
