No OTT Release For ‘Doctor’, Announces Release In Theatres

In a major boost for theatres, especially those down south, much-awaited Tamil film ‘Doctor’ has announced that it will release only in theatres, and not on OTT, as initially feared. KJR Studios, the production house behind the film, made the announcement this evening, on their social media handles.

The release of Tamil film ‘Doctor’ has been the subject of speculation ever since it had to put off its original theatrical release date in March. Growing rumours did the rounds that the Sivakarthikeyan starrer is skipping theatrical release altogether, and going in for a direct to digital release on OTT. Disney Plus Hotstar was said to be the platform that had bought Doctor for a direct to digital release at a fancy price.

Now, this latest update from the makers puts an end to all the speculations. It also brings cheer to the beleaguered theatres and film exhibition industry, which has been shut for months in the pandemic. Doctor releasing in theatres is also a huge win for fans of Sivakarthikeyan, who have been running a sustained campaign on social media, demanding Doctor to be released only in theatres.

There’s been huge buzz and tons of updates about Sivakarthikeyan’s Tamil film, Doctor. The medical action drama is easily one of the most awaited in Tamil cinema at present. Now that the Covid-19 pandemic is waning in most regions, the producers of Doctor are keen to explore the option of a theatrical release for the film. Theatres are slowly opening up in several markets. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where Tamil films traditionally do well, have opened up theatres since June. Karnataka theatres reopened in July, and Tamil Nadu theatres resumed film screenings from August.

October is the most favourable time for KJR Studios to release Doctor in theatres. There is no big release in sight, so no competition. The studio hasn’t given any definite Doctor release date yet. But trade insiders are of the opinion that they will release Doctor on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra, which falls on 13th October this year.

The Nelson Dilipkumar directed film was to release on 26th March 2021, but was postponed due to the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. A new date was announced, for Eid 2021, that is May 13th, which was again cancelled owing to the Covid second wave. Now that the announcement has come, fans can rejoice and gear up to watch Doctor in theatres!
