American actress and producer Emma Stone’s résumé boasts it all: two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a whole lot of prestigious nominations. And yet, every passing day marks a new feather added to her cap.
Fresh off of the success of her Academy / BAFTA / Golden Globe award-winning performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things’, Stone seemingly has no time to rest still! Upcoming for her so far are: Lanthimos’ next ‘Kinds of Kindness’ and ‘Bugonia’; the sequel to her critically acclaimed adaptation of Disney’s ‘101 Dalmations’ ‘Cruella 2′; Julio Torres’ comedy series ‘Fantasmas’; and Ari Aster’s black comedy film ‘Eddington’.
However, another title has officially been added to the aforementioned list as she has been cast in Emmy-nominee Nathan Fielder’s feature-length film directorial debut ‘Checkmate’ for A24! Stone will also be joining the team as a producer.
The plot follows the scandal surrounding 19-year-old chess grandmaster Hans Niemann defeating the older and more experienced World Champion Magnus Carlsen at a 2022 tournament.
Carlsen subsequently withdrew from the tournament and implied that his opponent had cheated. Although no hardcore evidence was found against Niemann, a few unfortunate jokes later, the world came to know the predicament as ‘chess’ anal beads scandal’.
