The much anticipated ‘The Croods’ sequel has dropped in the US theaters and well… the box office results are underwhelming. Of course, the ongoing pandemic isn’t helping with the results with the majority of the theaters still closed around the country.
Still, ‘The Croods: A New Age’ opened to 2,650 (out of the 5,500) theaters and cinema halls scattered across America on Thanksgiving (Wednesday) at 1.85 million USD. There is hope that Croods 2 will reach 10 million USD by Sunday, but the five-day projections are said to be too unpredictable, so the aforementioned 10 million sounds too good to be true. Even with Black Friday, there is no guarantee that this trend will continue, rise or fall.
Universal spent heftly in marketing the film via TV Spots (NBCUniversal and Comcast) and other outlets (Burger, Vizio, etc.) and that has made the film – arguably the second best opening day record since the cinemas reopened post pandemic (The first being ‘New Mutants’ at 3.1 million USD and ‘TENET’s’ opening day numbers were not even reported by Warner Bros.). Sure those numbers don’t mean much, but the adverts are going to help in the long run (which is the point).
But this need not be taken into account. Film critics have commended the film, with CinemaScore giving the film an A while Rotten Tomatoes have given it a 71%, just below it’s predecessor’s 72%. Universal Studios has a good film in their hands and like the Nolan Thriller ‘TENET’, it will recuperate back its money and eventually start earning profits once enough time has passed.
And all this is not counting the fact that the film is going to be released internationally this weekend. Croods 2 is set to open in China, Singapore and in the Middle East by Sunday. The sequel will be available online after 30 days on PVOD as well.
